Birmingham rapidly became England’s second city during the 18th century as the steam engine revolutionized the mining industry. In the West Midlands, central England’s former mining region known as the Black Country, Birmingham lies just to the east of Wales, about a three-hour drive northwest of London, where the Industrial Revolution was born, and where northern England begins. The industrial squalor which persisted for generations ultimately was wiped clean by the massive bombings of World War II, but out of the rubble Birmingham now has been reborn as England’s second largest city and the most popular, contemporary convention destination in the country. The relatively young populace attracted by Birmingham’s three universities also supports a number of lively evening venues, and many excellent restaurants have opened in response to the demands of an increasing number of well-heeled visitors from all over the world.
